Description
Trospium (TROSE-pee-um)is used to treat bladder problems such as frequent need to urinate or lossof control of urinary function.
This medicine is available only with your doctor's prescription, in thefollowing dosage forms:
Before Using This Medicine
In decidingto use a medicine, the risks of using the medicine must be weighed againstthe good it will do. This is a decision you and your doctor will make. Fortrospium, the following should be considered:
Allergies?Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusualor allergic reaction to trospium. Also tell your doctor and pharmacist ifyou are allergic to any other substances, such as foods, preservatives, ordyes.
Pregnancy?Trospium has not been studied in pregnant women.However, studies in animals have shown that trospium may cause unwanted effectsin the fetus. Before taking this medicine, make sure your doctor knows ifyou are pregnant or if you become pregnant.
Breast-feeding?It is not known whether trospium passes intobreast milk. However, trospium does pass into the milk of animals. Motherswho are taking this medicine and who wish to breast-feed should discuss thiswith their doctor.
Children?Studies on this medicine have been done only inadult patients, and there is no specific information comparing use of trospiumin children with use in other age groups.
Older adults?This medicine has been tested and has not beenshown to cause different side effects or problems in older people than isdoes in younger adults. However, elderly patients are more likely to be sensitiveto anticholinergic agents and may require a lower dose.
Other medicines?Although certain medicines should not be usedtogether at all, in other cases two different medicines may be used togethereven if an interaction might occur. In these cases, your doctor may want tochange the dose, or other precautions may be necessary. Tell your health careprofessional if you are taking any other prescription or nonprescription (over-the-counter[OTC]) medicine.
Other medical problems?The presence of other medicalproblems may affect the use of trospium. Make sure you tell your doctor ifyou have any other medical problems, especially:
- Glaucoma or
- Stomach problems or
- Urinary retention?Trospium may make these conditions worse.
- Kidney problems or
- Liver problems?A lower dose of trospium may be necessary.
Proper Use of This Medicine
Dosing?The dose of trospium will be different for different patients. Follow your doctor's orders or the directions on thelabel. The following information includes only the average doses oftrospium. If your dose is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.
- For oral dosage form (tablets):
- To treat bladder problems:
- Adults?20 milligrams (mg) one or two times a day 1 hour beforemeal.
- Children?Use and dose must be determined by your doctor.
Missed dose?If you miss a dose of this medicine, take 1 hourbefore next meal. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip themissed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses.
Storage?To store this medicine:
- Keep out of the reach of children.
- Do not store in the bathroom, near the kitchen sink, or in otherdamp places. heat or moisture may cause the medicine to break down.
- Do not keep outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed. Be surethat any discarded medicine is out of the reach of children.
Precautions While Using This Medicine
Thismedicine may cause some people to have vision problems. Make sure your vision is clear before you drive or do anything else that couldbe dangerous if you are not able to see well.
This medicine, especially in high doses, may cause some people to becomedizzy or drowsy. Make sure you know how you react tothis medicine before you drive, use machines, or do anything else that couldbe dangerous if you are dizzy or are not alert.
Avoid use of alcohol. Alcohol may increase yourrisk of drowsiness.
Use caution during exercise or hot weather.Overheating may result in heat stroke.
This medicine may cause dryness of the mouth, nose, and throat. For temporaryrelief of mouth dryness, use sugarless candy or gum, melt bits of ice in yourmouth, or use a saliva substitute. However, if your mouth continues to feeldry for more than 2 weeks, check with your medical doctor or dentist.
Side Effects of This Medicine
Along with its needed effects, a medicinemay cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects mayoccur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Blistering, peeling, loosening of skin; changes in vision; chills; clammy skin; confusion as to time, place, or person; cough; dark-colored urine; diarrhea; difficulty swallowing; dizziness; enlarged pupils; fast or slow heartbeat; fever; hallucinations; hives; holding false beliefs that cannot be changedby fact; increased sensitivity of eyes to light; increased sweating, possibly with fever or cold; itching; joint or muscle pain; muscle cramps or spasms; muscle painor stiffness; puffiness or swelling of the eyelidsor around the eyes, face, lips or tongue; red irritatedeyes; red skin lesions, often with a purple center; seeing, hearing, or feeling things that are notthere; severe chest pain; severe headache; shortness of breath; skin rash; sore throat; sores, ulcers, or white spots in mouth or on lips; stiff or sore neck; tightness in chest; unusual excitement, nervousness, or restlessness; unusual tiredness or weakness; wheezing
Symptoms of Overdose
Get emergency help immediately if any of the followingsymptoms of overdose occur
Bigger, dilated, or enlarged pupils [black part of eye]; blurred vision; confusion; constipation; delirium; difficult urination; dizziness; drowsiness; dry eyes, mouth, nose, orthroat; eye pain; fast,pounding, or irregular heartbeat or pulse; flushingor redness of face; hallucinations; increased sensitivity of eyes to light; nausea; troubled breathing; vomiting
Other side effects may occur that usually do not need medicalattention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjuststo the medicine. However, check with your doctor if any of the following sideeffects continue or are bothersome.
