Sacrosidase (sa-KRO-si-daze) is used to replace the enzyme (called sucrase)that helps the body digest sucrose (sugar). It is used in certain conditionsin which the body is not making enough sucrase.
This medicine is available only with your doctor's prescription, in thefollowing dosage form:
Before Using This Medicine
In deciding to use a medicine,the risks of taking the medicine must be weighed against the good it willdo. This is a decision you and your doctor will make. For sacrosidase, thefollowing should be considered:
Allergies?Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual orallergic reaction to sacrosidase. Also tell your health care professionalif you are allergic to any other substances, such as foods, preservatives,or dyes.
Pregnancy?Sacrosidase has not been studied in humans or animals.Discuss with your doctor whether or not you should take it during pregnancy.
Breast-feeding?Sacrosidase is broken down in the stomach, so itdoes not pass into breast milk.
Other medical problems?The presence of other medical problems may affectthe use of sacrosidase. Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any othermedical problems, especially:
- Type 2 diabetes mellitus?This medicine affectshow much sugar is absorbed and broken down by the body, so changes in planningof your diet may be needed
Proper Use of This Medicine
Take sacrosidase with meals or snacks. It is best to take about halfof the dose at the beginning of the meal or snack and the rest at the end.
Mix each dose of this medicine in 2 to 4 ounces ofmilk, water, or infant formula. Do not heat the medicine or mix itin warm or hot beverages, which could cause it to break down and not workas well. Also, do not mix it with fruit juice because the acid in the juicecould cause the medicine to break down.
When prescribing this medicine for your condition,your doctor may also prescribe a personal diet for you. Follow carefully thespecial diet your doctor gives you.
Dosing?The dose of sacrosidase will be different fordifferent patients. Follow your doctor's orders or thedirections on the label. The following information includes only theaverage doses of sacrosidase. If your dose is different,do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.
The amount of solution you take depends on your weight. The solution can be measured using the special scoop provided or by countingthe correct number of drops through the special tip on the container.
- For oral dosage form (oral solution):
- To help digest sugar:
- Adults, teenagers, and children weighing more than 15 kilograms (kg)(33 pounds)?2 milliliters (mL) (44 drops) with each meal or snack.
- Children weighing up to 15 kg (33 pounds)?1 mL (22 drops) witheach meal or snack.
Missed dose?If you miss a dose of this medicine, skip the misseddose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses.
Storage?To store this medicine:
- Keep out of the reach of children.
- Store away from heat and direct light.
- Store in the refrigerator. However, keep the medicine from freezing.
- Do not keep outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed. Be surethat any discarded medicine is out of the reach of children.
Side Effects of This Medicine
Along with its needed effects, a medicine maycause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur,if they do occur they may need medical attention.
The following side effectsusually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away duringtreatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. However, check with your doctorif any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome:
